European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
